Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) Field – Flaxland Way

Date Added 03 October 2023

Dear residents,

We have recently put signage up at the SAM field on Flaxland Way and received a few questions about our reasoning. We would like to explain why we feel the need to ask residents to walk their dogs on a lead in this area.

As a reminder, the field is officially recognised as a Scheduled Ancient Monument to protect the archaeological remains of Little Weldon Villa, and contains information boards which explain the Roman history of the site. The area has walking routes through it, but the perimeter boundary is not fully enclosed.

Over the last year or so we have experience increasing numbers of complaints, including:

  • The field being used by a high number of off site visitors, often bringing several dogs, parking vehicles along Lavatts Way and Flaxland Way, blocking drives and disturbing residents
  • Dog foul is now a serious issue, due to many dog owners are not clearing up after their pets
  • Dog fights, dogs attacking other dogs, owners not able to control their pets
  • Issues raised with dog safety as the field is adjacent to the A43

We would firstly like to confirm that there are no issues with dogs being walked in the area, but we ask residents to keep them on a lead and clean up after them.

We will be installing some more permanent signage at the entrances.

We are happy to meet with residents to discuss this.

Please contact us on [email protected] with any questions and whether you would like to meet with us to discuss further.
