A visit by Elizabeth I to Rockingham forest resulted in the queen granting Corby its Charter, and allowing the local people to travel freely along the main roads without having to pay the tolls. Rumour has it that whilst riding through the forest, the Queen fell from her horse – only to be saved by Corby’s local village people, she granted the Charter as a thank you. Priors Hall Park’s neighbour, Kirby Hall, begins its construction.

We are very proud to boast that Priors Hall Park contains the remains of two ancient Roman Villas. Most significantly, the villa situated at the South End of site – Weldon Lakes – was excavated initially in 1738, and then re-excavated in the 1950’s. The details discovered showed that the Villa was occupied in the late 1st, early 2nd century. Mosaic pavements and coins were found during the dig. This villa was believed to have been abandoned in the mid-4th century. It is also understood that the Romans were the first miners of the local iron ore
