Annual newt reserve management works

Over January /February 2025 there will be habitat management works within the newt reserve areas including the Northern and Central Gulley and Old Quarry Woods.  The works are following the management requirements of the Habitat and Management and Maintenance Plan agreed under the newt licences for the site.

These works will include –

• Management of vegetation around ponds including coppicing of shrubs to reduce shade and cutting back of reed to improve the pond conditions for newts
• Creation of small log piles and brash piles to provide shelter habitat for amphibians
• Draining down of ponds to manage fish populations and to improve conditions for breeding newts
